A 5-star hotel opened in 2011 in Berovo, Aurora Resort & Spa brings together 29 rooms across 7 buildings, a full spa and direct access to the lake and forests of Maleshevo.

Aurora Resort & Spa is a 5-star hotel founded in 2011, set in the countryside of Berovo, in eastern Macédoine. The property plays the residential estate card: 29 rooms spread across 7 buildings, a full spa, two pools and event facilities that make it one of the most comprehensive addresses in the region.

Why stay here

Aurora appeals to travellers who want to combine high-end comfort with direct access to the nature of eastern Macédoine. The hamlet format, with several small buildings scattered throughout the grounds, avoids the monolithic hotel feel and offers more intimacy than a vertical complex. Lake Berovo is reached in 3 minutes by car, the town centre in 7 minutes, which makes it easy to alternate rest on-site, village outings and water activities without complicated logistics.

The establishment remains one of the rare addresses in the region to offer a genuine spa, a 24-hour fitness centre and rooms capable of hosting seminars, weddings and receptions, making it a base for private events as well.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere is deliberately calm. The stone and wood buildings blend with the surrounding Maleshevo forest, a mid-mountain area renowned for its pure air and pastures. The grounds, crossed by pathways and dotted with terraces, form the backbone of life on-site: you move from one building to the spa, from the spa to the pool, from the pool to the restaurant without truly leaving the outdoors.

Staff are multilingual (English, Macedonian, Serbian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Turkish), an asset in a region where English proficiency remains uneven. The reception maintains a family character despite its 5-star status.

The rooms

The hotel offers 29 accommodations divided into seven categories, making it possible to cater to couples, families or extended stays alike:

  • Superior room
  • Deluxe room
  • Studio
  • Junior suite
  • Duplex suite
  • One-bedroom apartment
  • Duplex apartment

The higher categories include a stone fireplace, a sitting area and a desk. Apartments come with an equipped kitchenette (kettle, coffee maker, crockery), practical for stays of a week or more. Depending on the building, rooms open onto the garden or onto the surrounding heights, and most benefit from a private balcony or patio.

Spa, dining and services

The spa combines sauna, hammam (Turkish bath) and hot tub, complemented by a treatment menu (massages, facials and body care). The two pools, indoor and outdoor, extend the wellness offer throughout the seasons. The fitness centre is open 24/7.

On the dining front, the hotel restaurant serves lunch and dinner, with cuisine that blends Macedonian classics and a more international menu. Breakfast is served from 07:30 to 10:00. A lounge bar and poolside bar complete the facilities.

For business travel and celebrations, the hotel provides a conference room for up to 100 people and a VIP room for 30 people, as well as outdoor spaces (garden, poolside areas) used for weddings and receptions. Standard services include 24-hour reception, concierge, laundry, free parking and assistance with excursions.

Berovo and its region

Berovo is located in the Maleshevo region, at the far eastern tip of Macédoine, near the Bulgarian border. It is a mid-mountain area covered with pine and spruce forests, traditionally devoted to livestock farming and cheese production. Lake Berovo, created in the 1970s, is now the focal point of local outdoor activities.

From Skopje, allow approximately 3 hours of driving; from Sofia, the connection is more direct via Delčevo. The region remains little visited by international tourism, which preserves its character.

When to visit

The site is suitable for use almost year-round. From May to October, the season is ideal for hiking, mountain biking, kayaking on the lake and evenings on the terrace. July and August offer the mildest temperatures at altitude, away from the heat of the plains. Autumn, short but very colourful, is well-suited to wellness retreats. In winter, snow regularly settles at altitude and the atmosphere shifts to resort format, centred around the spa and fireplace.

What to do nearby

On-site or in the immediate vicinity, the hotel offers or facilitates:

  • Kayaking, fishing and boating on Lake Berovo
  • Guided hikes on Maleshevo trails
  • Mountain bike rental to explore forest tracks
  • Horse or pony riding
  • Visit to Berovo town centre, its monastery and local cheese workshops

The region combines well with stops in eastern Macédoine (Strumica, Delčevo) or with a trip to neighbouring Bulgaria.
