How to choose your circuit in Macédoine?

The choice depends on available time and your preferred pace. A 7 to 9-day stay allows you to combine Skopje, Matka Canyon and Lake Ohrid at a leisurely pace. To include a mountain range and the Tikveš wine valley, plan for 8 to 12 days, the ideal duration to breathe between stages. Travelers wishing to complete a large northwest and southeast loop with hikes in Pelister and Šar Planina will opt for 13 to 17 days, which also opens the possibility of an extension to neighboring Albania or Kosovo.

Different circuit types

Our itineraries vary according to your interests. Cultural circuits explore Byzantine and Ottoman heritage, from the frescoes of Saint Sophia in Ohrid to the old bazaar of Skopje, through the monasteries of Saint-Naum and Bigorski. Adventure circuits focus on treks in Pelister, climbing Korab at 2,764 m or mountain biking descents in Mavrovo. Family circuits combine swimming in Lake Ohrid, boat rides through Matka Canyon and fun visits to the ancient site of Stobi, with short stages and stays in family guesthouses.

What is the best season?

Macédoine is pleasant to visit from late April to mid-October. May and June offer lush nature, temperatures of 20 to 26°C and uncrowded sites. July and August, warmer at 30 to 35°C in the plains, remain perfect for enjoying Lake Ohrid whose water exceeds 22°C. September is our peak period: grape harvest in the Vardar valley, soft light, mild temperatures and low crowds. Winter, from December to March, attracts ski enthusiasts to Mavrovo and Popova Šapka, but closes access to high-altitude trails.
