Perched on a dramatic chaos of granite boulders overlooking the city of Prilep, Marko's Towers (Markovi Kuli) are the remains of a medieval fortress linked to Prince Marko, a heroic figure in Slavic epic tradition. The site commands a striking panorama over the Pelagonian plain and ranks among the best-preserved examples of medieval Macedonian military architecture.

- Accessibility : not wheelchair accessible — steep trail and rocky terrain.
What You'll See
The ruins comprise sections of defensive walls, partially standing watchtowers, and the foundations of interior buildings. Natural granite blocks, integrated into the construction, give the site its spectacular character. A small rock-hewn chapel is carved directly into the stone near the fortifications.
History and Context
The fortress dates back to late antiquity, but it reached its zenith in the 14th century under King Vukašin and his son, Prince Marko. The latter, an Ottoman vassal after the Battle of Maritsa (1371), became a legendary figure in Serbian and Macedonian epic poetry. Following his death in 1395, the fortress gradually lost its strategic importance.
Highlights of Your Visit
The Panorama over the Pelagonian Plain
From the summit of the boulders, views sweep across Prilep and the vast agricultural plains surrounding it. On clear days, the mountains of Baba and Babuna form the distant horizon. This ranks among the most expansive panoramas in central North Macedonia.
The Monumental Granite Blocks
The site's geology is as impressive as its history. The rounded boulders, some several meters high, form a natural labyrinth that medieval builders ingeniously exploited as an additional defensive layer.
The Rock-Hewn Chapel
Carved directly from the stone, this small chapel retains traces of frescos. It testifies to the spiritual dimension of the fortress and the continuity of human occupation on the site.
Photography Tips
Morning light is ideal: it illuminates the walls frontally and avoids backlighting. In late afternoon, the setting sun bathes the granite boulders in orange hues. Bring a wide-angle lens to capture both the ruins and the plains below. No known photography restrictions apply at the site.

Prilep connects to Skopje by road (roughly 130 km) and to Bitola (about 45 km to the south). No direct public transport runs to the trailhead.
